The researchers also found a positive association between one form of vitamin E, gamma tocopherol, and a risk of Type II diabetes. With the disease reaching epidemic proportions, obviously more research is needed into the protection from Type II diabetes specific nutrients provide. They note that no foreign-educated doctor may even apply for a U.S. residency without passing three sections of the same U.S. Medical Licensing Exam taken by U.S.-educated doctors. Then they must secure a residency position, which itself is another level of screening. In 2008, only 42.6 percent of foreign-educated medical graduates passed the U.S. exam on the first attempt, and only 73 percent who passed were able to secure a U.S. residency. The researchers further note that studies show essentially no difference in patient outcomes or state disciplinary actions between U.S. and foreign medical graduates.

The real reason for the longer residency requirements, the researchers allege, is discriminatory. Until the 1970s, when the Supreme Court declared the practice illegal, U.S. state medical boards regularly barred non-citizens from receiving licensure. The first longer residency requirements were implemented following this court decision. Indeed, the researchers found that states with medical boards financed by member doctors (widely considered less publicly accountable than state-financed boards) are significantly more likely to impose longer residency requirements on foreign-educated doctors.

Significantly, states with longer residency requirements for foreign graduates have lower quality medical service, as well as higher doctor salaries (and therefore higher patient costs).

A simple solution

Using computer modeling, the researchers estimated that equalizing residency requirements for U.S. and foreign graduates would end shortages of general practitioners in 25 states. Not only would this dramatically improve patient care, it would also save the average state $139 million per year in fewer hospital visits alone.

Other medical and cost savings would be expected to come from lower rates and severity of chronic diseases, increased numbers of specialist physicians, and decreasing the income disparity between doctors and the general population.

“Each of these omissions suggest that we vastly underestimate the economic impact of eliminating international medical graduates’ residency requirements in this counterfactual policy simulation,” the researchers wrote.

“While equalizing residency requirements would not completely satisfy physician needs in half the states, it is a straightforward, practical policy change that can result in measurable improvements in social welfare,” researcher Sonal Pandya said.

The researchers found that the earlier a woman underwent surgical menopause, the faster she experienced a decline in overall thinking abilities and memory, particularly memory relating to time and place and long-term memory relating to ideas and concepts. No such association was seen between cognitive decline and the onset of natural menopause.

In addition, the brains of women who underwent surgical menopause at a younger age had significantly more of the plaques associated with Alzheimer’s disease than those of women who had undergone the procedure later in life. Younger age of surgical menopause was not associated with overall risk of Alzheimer’s disease, however.

Sudden drop in hormone levels

Researchers have known for quite some time that many women report short-term cognitive problems following menopause, both natural and surgical. A recent study, conducted by researchers from the University of Rochester and published in the journal Menopause, found that women between the ages of 40 and 60 who were in their first year after menopause scored significantly lower on tests of motor function, verbal learning, verbal memory, working memory and attention than pre-menopausal women. The effects were largest for verbal learning and memory.

The researchers believe that this effect is caused by a sudden drop in the levels of estrogen, which plays a critical role in cognition and memory. This hypothesis is supported by the fact that the researchers in the surgical menopause study found that women who had undergone hormone replacement therapy had a slower rate of cognitive decline.

“In the months after a woman has her last period, hormonal changes are most abrupt,” said Pauline Maki, lead researcher of the Rochester study.

In the case of natural menopause, cognitive changes are temporary, and do not appear to be linked to the risk of dementia. According to the new study, the changes associated with surgical menopause are more long-term.

Due to the severe health risks associated with hormone replacement therapy; however, the researchers did not recommend it as a treatment for these symptoms.

“At this time, there’s no indication to use hormone replacement therapy for the sole treatment of memory problems in natural or surgical menopause,” Maki said.

This study mentioned clear evidence of milk thistle’s ability to fight reproductive system cancer cells in both males and females, as well as skin cancer. Milk thistle is generally accepted as safe and well-tolerated.

The National Cancer Institute readily admits there are case studies proving the effectiveness of milk thistle for cancer. In one case study, a woman with leukemia had to stop chemotherapy because her liver enzyme levels were abnormal. When milk thistle was administered, those levels were normalized, and the woman was able to continue her cancer treatments.

In a second case, a man’s liver tumors regressed before beginning chemotherapy simply by taking milk thistle.

Yet a third, placebo-controlled study involving 50 children with leukemia showed improvement over a four week period when the experimental group of children took milk thistle. Tests showed that milk thistle was able to protect the children’s livers from the toxic effects of chemotherapy to the point where these children did not have to have their dosages reduced. Unfortunately, there was not enough improvement to be documented as “significant.”

The National Cancer Institute goes on to mention clinical studies which support the use of milk thistle for a variety of liver diseases, hepatitis C, and diabetes. So why not say milk thistle “works-”

Revisited and reconfirmed in August 2012, the National Cancer Institute stated that it cannot recommend the use of milk thistle in cancer therapy because of a qualifying standard called “evidence scores.”

An evidence analysis looks at the strength of the statistics used in any clinical study and the strength of the endpoint, or outcome of any given treatment. Combining these analyses produces an evidence score, which is assigned to every study submitted to the National Cancer Institute for review.

In the case of milk thistle, the problem lies not in the herb, but in the limited number of clinical studies. Until more well-designed research is performed, the National Cancer Institute cannot recommend milk thistle as a remedy for cancer.

Undervaccinated children were found to have significantly fewer outpatient and emergency visits to the hospital, in comparison to age-appropriately vaccinated children. Also, the authors found that despite the immense political, corporate and medical pressure for forcing vaccinations, the undervaccination trend is growing strong, with more and more parents opting out of the vaccination schemes for their kids.

The JAMA editorial team considers these findings an enigma and highlights the fact that none of these alternative childhood immunization schedules are approved or tested for their efficacy, implying that the approved vaccines are fully tested and safe, which is simply not true. This study proves that staying away or even delaying the toxic cocktails called vaccines may have a measurable effect on the health status and immune system robustness. This is solid evidence that the expected and highly promoted benefits of immunization are not a medical reality, but misleading information and perhaps wishful thinking from the manufacturing pharmaceutical industries and their well-paid medical spokesmen.
